Just south of the holy shrines to chalk that are Le Mesnil, Cramant, and Avize, lies the sleepy and picturesque Premier Cru village of Vertus – home to one of the crown jewels of the Côtes des Blancs: Champagne Doyard. The young and dynamic Charles Doyard is the current owner and winemaker, taking over from his father in 2006. During his time at the helm, Charles purchased parcels in the finest villages in Champagne, raised the quality of the farming across the board, and completely upgraded the cellar – all in his drive to elevate the domaine into a beacon for precise, mineral-etched, chiseled Champagnes. Charles farms 10 ha of vineyards in Vertus and the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil, Cramant, Oger, Avize and Aÿ. The viticultural philosophy employed by the domaine is a self-described “non-dogmatic” approach to biodynamic farming with absolutely no herbicides or pesticides used. In the cellar, state of the art double banked Coquard PAI presses are employed and every parcel is vinified separately. All of the wines undergo long lees aging – a minimum of 48 months on many of the cuvées –lending them that have become the envy of the Côtes des Blancs. Every single decision made in the vineyard and cellar is geared toward making the most expressive, terroir focused Champagne possible. Tasting through the lineup – from the profound complexity found in the NV Cuvee Vendemiaire Premier Cru Brut, to the soaring aromatics and clear definition of the Clos de l’Abbaye – makes it abundantly clear that Doyard is crafting Champagnes that speak with crystalline precision.
