In the north-western edge of the Barolo DOCG lies an area known as Verduno. Sitting high with panoramic views of Barolo, Verduno has become famous for producing Barolo from the famed ‘Monvigliero’ vineyard. But there is another wine that has our attention today. The 2017 Fratelli Alessandria Verduno Pelaverga ‘Speziale’ is only found in this part of Piemonte and is a bit of a fascination among Italian wine lovers. Aromas of wild strawberries, white pepper, raspberry and lavender grab you. There are less than a dozen producers making this wine, a red we love with a slight chill. While we look forward to the Barolo Monvigliero from Fratelli Alessandria to arrive in December, this is the perfect wine for autumn nights around a warm fire.
