“Opaque ruby. Expressive aromas of ripe dark fruit, spicecake and candied flowers are sharpened by a smoky mineral element. Palate-caressing black/blue fruit and violet flavors become fleshier and spicier with air, picking up a hint of salty olive with air. Suave, seamless and appealingly sweet, finishing with solid thrust and slow-building tannins that are absorbed by the wine's energetic fruit.”
The Levet Domain is one of the most reliable sources for traditional Côte-Rôtie for many years. But with a mere three and a half hectares of vines, all of them in Côte-Rôtie, the Levets’ wines will never be especially easy to find. Under the watch of Agnès Levet the quality of the wines has never been better. The wines show more polish than those of her late mother and father and are some of the wildest, most highly expressive examples of the appellation, without them veering too far off to the animal, feral side of the northern Rhône style. Longtime fans of this domaine should be all over the 2015s. They demonstrate a power and depth alongside a clear sense of place that is unmatched since I first discovered these wines with the 1998 vintage. This is the first year that this cuvee, Bernard Levet Cote Rotie Cuvee Amethyste 2015 has been imported. This house cuvee comes from all the parcels the family owns. It is intended to be the most open and ready to drink, while that is relative to the house style, I would recommend a long decant, a raging fire and some braised meats to accompany this unadulterated version of northern Rhone Syrah.
